In Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in the year 1776, a professor of canon law named Adam Weishaupt gathered five trusted colleagues and founded a society dedicated to an idea the world had never fully dared to act upon: that reason, not rank, was the highest authority of mankind.
What began as a circle of five scholars in a Bavarian university town grew within a decade into an Order of several thousand members stretching across Europe — philosophers, nobles, diplomats, and free-thinkers who shared the dream of a world governed by knowledge and moral clarity rather than superstition and hereditary privilege.
The Order faced suppression by the Bavarian government in 1785, but its ideas could not be so easily extinguished. The core teachings were preserved by devoted members and carried quietly across generations, surviving every political upheaval that the centuries could muster.
The Bavarian Illuminati Temple stands as the continuation of that original fraternal covenant. We do not claim the mythology that popular culture has projected upon us — no hidden hand over world governments, no sinister rites. What we do claim is simpler and, we believe, far more profound: a genuine brotherhood in pursuit of wisdom and service.
Today, the Order maintains lodges across four continents, admits members through a considered and transparent process, and directs significant charitable effort toward education and community welfare — as it has, in one form or another, for nearly 250 years.
